Noah just had a PANIC ATTACK- what do I do? - Parent-2-Parent & Reflux in Children

I have been in denial but I *knew* Noah was showing signs of anxiety. My anxiety symptoms started as a child but, in those days, nobody knew anything and I thought everybody felt that way. Well, now there is no denying it. He came out of his room crying and shaking. When I asked what was wrong, he said he was having bad dreams. He hadn't gone to sleep, yet, a point I reminded him of. Then he said, well then I am thinking lots of scary stuff and I can't make it stop. His heart was beating so fast I thought it was going to jump out of his chest.
I went and laid next to him in bed and tried to talk to him about it. he said his thoughts were about real things and made up things. Like, first he was worried his room wasn't clean enough and I would yell at him (this has NEVER happened) then he would start thinking about a giant llizard taking him away and I couldn't stop it. He said he just kept having thought after thought and he couldn't stop them.
We prayed about it and then I put a radio in his room so he could focus his mind on the music instead of the thoughts and he finally fell asleep.

I know this has nothing to do with how clean his room is. He has been very moody the past few days and easily upset when anyone talks about what is going on with his condition. (He did this once before when he was hospitalized for 8 days.) I also *suspect* he exagerated his arm injury on Friday (he did fall- it was witnessed by a teacher) in order to leave school and go see his ped. His ped is a HUGE source of comfort for him.

Should I call the ped and talk to him about it? Should I leave it alone and see what the GI wants to do next, if anything? If the GI doesn't do anything, i feel certain the anxiety will go away, but i guess it will just manifest later in response to some other stressor.

I am just so broken hearted right now. I did NOT want him to end up with this curse.

I'm so sorry that he is having so much anxiety, it is a lot for a little guy to deal with. I would mention it to the ped. and see if he can set up some sort of counseling for him. Big hugs to both of you.

Man poor guy. I don't have any experience but I think I would mention it so maybe some counceling could take place. Sigh...he has been through so much lately. I'm keeping you in my prayers.

I would call and tell them.With all the stress Noah's been under I bet that is bringing some anxiety on..I know in my reading about panic, stress or illness usually brings it on. The poor kid, I hope they can help him so he has one less thing on his plate!

I am so sorry Noah is going through so much. I can't imagine how he must be feeling. I know he is older than Patrick (so maybe it is different for him) but when they go through something so traumatic that fear of having it happen again is so overwhelming for them. It is so overwhelming for us as moms to go through it and I can't imagine how our little guys deal with it. Thinking of you guys all the time and praying. Hugs!

My best friend's son deals with anxiety. It is horrible at times especially if he has to be away from her. He lives with his mom and step dad, but step dad is really his "real dad." He is 9. He sees a phychologist and is on medicine for it. That seems to be working great. Any major changes in his life he needs time to prepare for or he has to not be told until the last second. For instance my best friend is out of town right now. Grandparents are staying wth him and his sister, but mom left a note in his backpack that somebody else was picking him up from school and she would see him on a certain date or else he would have a major attack and she couldn't have left. He is fine after she is gone, but it is that thought of her leaving. I understand b/c I deal with major anxiety. By the way, her son is taking Effexor for it.

I hope he doesn't have any more problems.

I am sorry that Noah has to deal w/panic attacks. I have had them since I was little and they are no fun. My cousin who is the same age as my mother taught me how to meditate when i was little and it really does work.
One of the excercise we did went like this. Find a nice quiet comfortable spot to lay down. Close your eyes and picture in your mind a place/time that made you the happiest you have ever been. Describe what you did, saw, and the feelings you felt during that time. Everytime you feel like you are going to have a panic attack, try this excersize. It really seemed to help me.
Here is another good meditational excersize to do before sleeping to relax the body. Lay down on your bed. Starting with your toes tighten them as tight as they can and then relax. Then move to the ankles and do the same thing. Do this the whole way up the body, litle by little, until you reach your hair. Usually by then the whole body is relaxed and you can go to sleep. You might want to put on quiet relaxing music during this excersize.

Merilla, we have talked before I have also cursed Tristan with this!! Tristan has panic attacks mostly about his peanut allergy!! He will think he cant breath, of course feeling like he is going to die, and goes out of control, crying, shaking,etc! I have to calm him down, and assure him he is ok. I have taken Tristan to therapist, and the system here sucks!!! So he just talks to the one at school. I do notice if I stay calm and look him in the eye and tell him he is fine, he gets better. Then of course sitting with him and reassuring him helps as well!! I am sooo sorry Noah is dealing with this. I am sure it has a lot to do with all the test being done!! I would def tell his ped that!! Maybe since Noah trusts the ped so much, the ped could talk with Noah~ Good Luck sweetie, I am thinking of you and praying for sweet Noah!

Oh yea when I was a teenager and having such HORRIBLE panic attacks, my heart would go LITERALLY crazy fast, like scary fast!! I was even put on heart meds to slow it down. I saw a therapist who put this thing on my finger that beeped as fast as my heart rate was, so I would put it on, that thing would be beating out of control, and he would make me lay down on the couch and tell me I had control of my thoughts and myself, I needed to slow the beeps down, and leave me until I did it!! I finally was able to do it!!! I then knew I had control of myself and could control it, it helped soooo much!!! So maybe somthing like that would help Noah!! Maybe he feels out of control of himself with all these scary medical tests!! Some how letting him know he has control of his mind and thoughts would help!!

Merilla, maybe just talking about it will help. I rememeber being in about 4th grade and having the same stupid dream over and over again.-maybe once a week or less but I never knew when. I'd wake up terrified and it got to the point where I didn't want to go sleep b/c I was afraid I was going to have the dream again. (There were some men sitting at our dining room table. I get up and see them in the middle of the night-in my dream- and ske them if they were company. They'd say no and start causing all over the house). One day my mom and a friend of mine were talking about dreams and I finally told them about it. It never happened again.

I'm sure Noah is stressed out - I don't know how much he knows but even if he doesn't know alot I'm sure he knows somethings wrong. It helps Hector if I tell him exactly where we are going and what's going to happen (as much as I can). I would let the ped know if Noah is comfortable with him or let Noah make that decision. I know it's hard but I think it's normal for Noah to feel like he does-he's not stressed about something minor.
