tape, adhesives, and rashes, oh my!

DS seems to be developing an allergy to every adhesive out there...ugh! Can't tape extention because removing any kind of tape on a daily basis was causing skin breakdown. Tried stat locks, tegaderm, grip locks, felxitrack, and they all worked for a while, now he is reacting to all of them. I have tried taping/pinning to to a shirt and we had too many pulled buttons. Any suggestions?

How is it getting pulled when it's taped to the clothes? That's all we used on Chris several pieces of tape. The clth medical tape. It held up to heavy pulling for a very active 0 to 4 yr old. Tball, taekwondo, park,.... The only time it got pulled was when we forgot to tape it. I used button up shirts so I could pull the extension between buttons and tape in on the front of the shirt. He was 24 hr feeds. You could also add an ace bandage on the button. Good luck

I hope you find something that works! We always used Hypafix tape. It is like a cloth tape.

Part of the issue with taping to clothes is that DS hates clothes, so any chance he can he tries to take them off, and he doesn't pay attention to the fact that there is something taped to them. The other thing we have seen (although far less often) is snaging due to just general roughness.

Yes, my dd is allergic to every tape/adhesive we have tried. However, is we use a skin prep first, then she can use anything she would otherwise have a reaction to. The skin preps come in small individual packets, like alcohol wipes, and leave a thin film on the skin. Then the adhesive bonds to the film, and not directly to your child's skin. There are many, many brands, but Cavilon makes one that is non sting, in case it comes in contact with any sensitive areas.

The stat locks come packaged with a skin prep, and he still has a problem. Have you found some skin preps to be be better than others? Do you think trying different brands is worth a shot?

I would try Cavilon. I also would try two layers. Put one layer on, let it dry, then put another layer on. The cavilon just has more of the product in each wipe, so it seems like you can get a thicker layer on the skin. If that doesn't work, have you every tried duoderm? My dd doesn't tolerate tagaderm, but our GI says duoderm can be easier on the skin. I'd try skin prep, then duoderm, and a securement device on top of that.

If the Duoderm doesn't work, I would consider Mepore film (we use this in place of Tegaderm) with skin prep under it and a securement device on top of it.

Coop had to get a little band thing that goes around his waist with a small shell covering the gj. He's allergic to most tape/adhesive so this worked.

You could put a thin mesh around the waist and use something like the Microfoam tape made by 3M on top of it.

We use a belly belt/band from Belly Buttons. Patchwork Peddler makes them as well. You can find both groups on facebook. I run his extension and tubing up over his shoulder and into his backpack to prevent snagging or excessive wiggling of extension. We also use the belts.

I like the over the shoulder idea (don't know why I never thought of that) that would keep most of it under his shirt and more stable.
